In India, the herb Tulsi also called holy basil (sometimes spelled "Tulasi") has been widely known for its health promoting and medicinal value for thousands of years. Commonly called sacred or holy basil, it is a principal herb of Ayurveda, the ancient traditional holistic health system of India. holy basil is known as "The Incomparable One", "The Mother Medicine of Nature” and "The Queen of Herbs". The round, often pointed leaves of the basil plant looks a lot like peppermint to which it is related.


Basil is a sensitive one-year plant. It can grow till approximately 45 cm high and 30 cm broad. The stems are hairy, square, and light green to red on the basis. The leaves are large, oval, pointy and bright green, with a warm and also fresh and strong smell. Basil is a highly fragrant plant whose leaves are used as a seasoning herb for many different types of foods. Basil has become one of the most recognizable herbs ever since pesto, the mixture of basil, pine nuts and parmesan cheese, has become popular. Basil also known as French Basil or Sweet Basil or Tulsi is an erect glabrous herb; 30-90 cm high is indigenous to India. The major types are American Basil, French Basil, Egyptian Basil and Indian Basil. There are more than 60 varieties of basil, all of which differ somewhat in appearance and taste. While the taste of sweet basil is bright and pungent, other varieties also offer unique tastes lemon basil, anise basil and cinnamon basil all have flavors that subtly reflect their name. The scientific name for basil is Ocimum basilicum.

   Uses of Basil in Food Industry

  It is used in vegetables, tomato sauces, chicken, pizzas, egg dishes and cheeses. It is used    in green Thai curry and Italian seasonings. Basil ice cubes are can be used for stews and     soups.
  Basil is also used in tea.
