Psyllium is typically available as either black or blond psyllium; however blond psyllium has more applications for health than the black variety. The information in this article is geared toward blond psyllium, as the majority of psyllium products are comprised of this type. Blond psyllium is most often used for constipation, for softening stools in people with hemorrhoids, fissures, pregnancy, or after surgery. Psyllium is also used as a mild bulking agent, and can be applied in cases of loose stools, irritable bowel syndrome, and colitis.

   Description

Psyllium is a small low-growing annual with long leaves and straight stalks. The stalks grow about a foot high and have clusters of many small white flowers on the ends. Flowers give way to seed capsules (seeds or small, dark, and glossy, often with a reddish tint) in about 60 days. Psyllium contains mucilage, a gelatinous substance that makes it useful as a thickening stabilizer, commonly used in foods and cosmetics. The psyllium makes it an intestinal regulator of constipation and diarrhea that acts to normalize the absorption of sugar and reduce cholesterol levels.
