A number of different rices are referred to as “red rice”. In most cases, people mean an unhulled or partially hulled rice which has a red husk, rather than the much more common brown. Like other unhulled rices, red rice has a nutty flavor, and a high nutritional value.



Red rice is a variety of rice with bran that's red, maroon or purple in color. The manufacturer only removes the outer husk of the rice grain in the milling process, while leaving the bran. You typically soak red rice in water before cooking it in order to make the rice softer. Red rice is generally high in starch, like other types of rice.

A serving of red rice contains a total of 220 calories, according to Fitbit. Carbohydrates provide 185 calories, protein contributes 20 calories and fat accounts for the remaining 15 calories. The calorie content in a serving of Roland red rice provides 11 percent of the daily value for calories. This daily value assumes a standard diet of 2,000 calories per day.

Red rice contains provides 42 g of total carbohydrates or 14 percent of the daily value for carbohydrates. This total consists of 37 g of starch, 4 g of dietary fiber and 1 g of sugar. The dietary fiber in a serving of red rice represents 16 percent of the daily value for fiber.
