Botanical Name - Coriandrum sativum
Family Name - Apiaceae

Coriander is one of the oldest herbs and spices on record. Coriander seeds are tan-colored, ribbed, lightweight fruits with subtle flavour that is warm and spicy with a slight hint of citrus flavour. Coriander spice has an aromatic sent which is soothingly warm, nutty, slightly fruity, and complex. Like other spices coriander is available throughout the year providing a fragrant flavour that is reminiscent of both citrus peel and sage. The fruit of the coriander plant contains two seeds which, when dried, are the portions used as the dried spice. When ripe, the seeds are yellowish-brown in colour with longitudinal ridges. Coriander seeds are available whole or in ground powder form.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), also called cilantro or dhania, is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. Coriander is native to southern Europe and North Africa to southwestern Asia. It is a soft, hairless plant growing to 50 centimetres (20 in) tall. The leaves are variable in shape, broadly lobed at the base of the plant, and slender and feathery higher on the flowering stems. The flowers are borne in small umbels, white or very pale pink, asymmetrical, with the petals pointing away from the center of the umbel longer (5–6 mm) than those pointing towards it (only 1–3 mm long). The fruit is a globular, dry schizocarp 3–5 mm diameter.
